Personalized Education

Mirus Secondary School is an educational option designed for those students in grades seven through twelve seeking an alternative approach to education.

Mirus offers personalized, small- group instruction that not only focuses on building skills within California State Standards, but also relies on parents and teachers to ensure the success of each student.

We believe that standards-based educational reform can change the way teachers teach and students learn in the future, and that interpersonal relationships serve as the foundation for individualized education.

When students enroll at Mirus, an educational team is created to encourage and support them toward their academic goals. A Personalized Education Plan (PEP) is introduced to student and parents by the site teacher, who then discusses the student’s learning styles, short- and long-term goals, current interests, academic history/credits earned, career interests, character education, skills development, and standardized test scores.

Subsequently, students and parents meet weekly with the site teacher in order to turn in assignments, receive tutoring, complete required paper work, issue new courses, arrange additional time in the learning center to study or attend daily direct-instruction workshops, and keep parents involved with their children’s education. They may also discuss academic progress towards the objectives of the PEP plan; continuing enrollment at Mirus; completion of a diploma, CHSPE, or GED; and/or plans for post-secondary school.

Maintaining continuous communication among all members of this educational team is critical for the student’s success.

The primary support person is the site teacher, who becomes fully acquainted with all forty students, their families, and the other factors affecting their lives. Teachers can provide access to numerous community resources, as well as the Mirus Support Services for intervention strategies to improve the quality of life for the students, their families, and the community at large.
